Millway Medical Practice is approved by Health Education England (HEE) to be a Training practice with certain GPs approved to be trainers. This means we have a variety of learners at the practice seeing patients under the supervision of an experienced GP.
Types of Learners:
GP Specialist Registrar (SpR)
This is a fully qualified doctor who has completed their foundation training in hospital and is now specialising in General Practice. During their time at Millway they will be consulting with patients whilst also studying for their speciality exams to become a Member of the Royal Collage of General Practitioners (MRCGP). They are supervised at all times by a named trainer. As part of a GP Registrars’ training they occasionally video/record their consultations. Your written consent will be obtained and you are under no obligation to agree to this.
Foundation Year Doctor (FY2)
This is a fully qualified doctor who is in their second-year post qualification and may have already chosen a career speciality other than general practice. They spend 4 months in General Practice learning about primary care medicine and are supervised by one of the GP trainers.
Medical Students
These are students who are on a General Practice placement as part of their University degree. At certain times in the year we occasionally host students from local London teaching hospitals such as UCLH, Imperial and King’s College.
Advanced Paramedic Practitioner
This is a fully qualified and experienced Paramedic with the London Ambulance service working under close supervision of an experienced GP. They are spending clinical days in General Practice as part of a new initiative to create closer links and have an understanding of primary care and the needs of the population. A paramedic’s role in General Practice may be to see acutely unwell patients in their homes and reduce unnecessary admissions to hospital.
Pre-registration Pharmacist
This is a graduated pharmacist who needs to complete a 12-month training programme to obtain clinical experience which will help them fulfil the requirements to be admitted to the register of practising pharmacists. Rotations can include community pharmacies, hospitals and general practice. At Millway they are supervised by a senior pharmacist.
Trainee Nurse Associate (TNA)
The nursing associate is a new generic nursing role in England that bridges the gap between healthcare support workers and registered nurses. They gain clinical experience under the supervision of a senior nurse.
General Practice Nurse Trainee (GPN)
These are qualified nurses who want to pursue a career in General Practice. They gain clinical experience under the supervision of an experienced practice nurse.
Physician Associates (PA) Students
This is a new role. These are graduates with a bioscience related degree who are now undergoing a post-graduation qualification. They undertake clinical training under the close supervision of an experienced GP. Their role will include taking a medical history from patients, performing physical examinations, diagnosing illness, developing management plans and more.
